Batistuta is a goleador also in the swimming pool.

Yesterday, he played a charity water polo match together with Balbo, Mareggini, Firicano and Antognoni. He scored three goals and his team won. 2000 spectators and a cashing of 33 million Lire.

FLORENCE (Gazzetta dello Sport) -- A white swimming cap with the number 9 on it, flippers, life-belt, Gabriel Batistuta showed up like this at the most unusual match of his life. The Argentinian champion enters the pool for charity, together with his teammates Balbo, Mareggini, Firicano, with Antonioni (swimming cap no. 10, of course) and other personalities. Florence, as usual, replies with enthusiasm, the stands at Costoli swimming pool are packed with people. The audience pays another tribute to his idol and it doesn't matter if this time it is not a tribute to a soccer champion but to a champion of humanity. But, in order to avoid misunderstandings, he became the top scorer of the evening with three goals.

Batigol is not the only person who needs the help of optional extras: "There is no alternative, we risk to drown and then I want to win." Balbo is the only one who challenges his opponents with the strength of his muscles only: "I'm in till I manage then I'm going to ask to be replaced."

The introduction, made in an American way, is a party with politicians, journalists, ex-water polo champions (such as Pizzo, De Magistris, Ferri, Alberani, Baracchini, Ghibellini, Spinelli, Fondelli, Formiconi, ex soccer players (such as Galbiati, Albertosi, Pazzagli, Giovanni Galli), the ex boxer Damiani, the ex-referee Damiani (wearing a '20s styled bathing suit), the swimmer Borracci, the gymnast Chechi (with a live-buoy), showbiz personalities as Bustric, Paci (who felt sick), Ariani ("First I play then I make the buoy"), Novelli (wearing a particular bathing suit) Santillo, Vannucci, Gennai, Pupo. The special trainers of the match were the female water polo national players: Malato, Allucci, Vailant and Conti. Special referee of the evening Rino Merola, a myth, aka Red Baron.

The challenge is between Florence and the-rest-of-the-world (it ended 9 to 8), four halfs of 10 minutes each, eleven men in the pool for each team. The beginning is unforgettable, Batistuta takes off his bathrobe and the audience roars. In the pool he seems to know what he's doing, he started the action which ended in a goal scored by Ghini, then he failed a clamorous opportunity while Balbo, opportunist as usual, didn't fail his chance to score. There are no schemes or tactics. Padalino, helped by his flippers, scored. Batistuta complained with the referee at any of his decision and then, served by De Magistris, he struck the goalkeeper and put on the famous imaginary machine-gun.

Con Balbo, Mareggini, Firicano e Antognoni ieri sera ha disputato una partita di pallanuoto a scopo benefico. Per lui 3 reti e la vittoria della sua squadra. Duemila spettatori, tanto entusiasmo e 33 milioni d’incasso

FIRENZE — Pinne, calottina bianca numero 9 e cintura salvagente, Gabriel Batistuta si presenta così alla partita più strana della sua vita. Il campione argentino scende in vasca per beneficenza, insieme ai compagni Balbo, Mareggini, Firicano e al d.g. Antognoni (calottina numero 10, naturalmente), con loro tanti altri personaggi. Firenze, come sempre, risponde alla grande riempiendo gli spalti della piscina Costoli e tributando l'ennesima ovazione al suo idolo, e poco importa se in questo caso si presentava solo come campione di umiltà e umanità, anziché come fuoriclasse indiscusso del calcio, anche se tanto per non sbagliarsi diventa il capocannoniere pure qui con tre reti.

Batigol non è l'unico che ricorre ad un aiuto: «Non c'è alternativa, si rischia di affogare, eppoi voglio vincere». Balbo è l'unico che sfida gli avversari con la sola forza dei suoi muscoli: «Vado dentro fino a quando riesco, poi mi faccio sostituire». La presentazione all'americana è una festa, con politici, giornalisti, ex campioni di pallanuoto come Pizzo, De Magistris, Ferri, Alberani, Baracchini, Ghibellini, Spinelli, Fondelli, Formiconi, ex calciatori come Galbiati, Albertosi, Pazzagli, Giovanni Galli, l'ex pugile Damiani, l'ex arbitro Menicucci (munito di un costume anni '20), campioni ancora in attività come il nuotatore Borracci, il ginnasta Chechi (con la ciambella), personaggi dello spettacolo come Bustric, Paci (colto da malore), Ariani («Prima gioco, poi faccio la boa»), Novelli (il suo costume supera in originalità persino quello di Menicucci), Santillo, Vannucci, Gennai, Pupo. Allenatori speciali le giocatrici della nazionale femminile di pallanuoto: Malato, Allucci, Vailant e Conti. Arbitro, specialissimo, Rino Merola, un mito tra i fischietti, con il soprannome di Barone Rosso.

La sfida è tra Firenze e il Resto del Mondo (finirà 9 a 8), 4 tempi di 10 minuti con undici uomini in vasca per squadra. L'esordio resterà indimenticabile per tutte le tifose presenti. Batistuta, infatti, si sfila l'accappatoio e scatena l'ovazione. In vasca si difende, ha il senso del gioco, innesta la rete di Ghini, poi fallisce un'occasione clamorosa di fronte ad Alberani, mentre Balbo, opportunista come sempre, non fallisce la sua opportunità. Non ci sono schemi, né tattiche. Padalino, aiutato dalle pinne, fa centro. Batistuta recita una protesta ad ogni decisione dell'arbitro, poi, servito addirittura da De Magistris, fulmina il portiere ed imbraccia il solito mitra immaginario.
